July 2018 update on Section 232 Investigation of Imports of Automobiles and Automotive Parts

On May 23, 2018, the Secretary of Commerce initiated an investigation under section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended, to determine the effects on the national security of imports of automobiles, including cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks, and automotive parts.

As part of its investigation, on May 30, 2018, the Department of Commerce issued a Federal Register Notice inviting written comments, including data, analyses, or information pertinent to this investigation, and announcing the public hearings.

The Department of Commerce will be holding public hearings as part of its investigation on July 19 and 20, 2018 from 8:30am to 5pm at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Auditorium located at:

1401 Constitution Ave, NW

The deadline to request to testify at the public hearing and submit a summary of expected testimony was June 29, 2018.

  • The hearings are open to the general public to attend but space is limited and is on a first-come-first-served basis. Those attending will be subject to security screenings and will need to present an official ID to gain entry to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • The U.S. Department of Commerce requires additional information from foreign national visitors to enter the building. If you are a foreign national and are interested in attending the public hearing, please email Autos232@doc.gov with your request to attend the hearings by July 16, 2018.

The investigation will take into account all relevant facts and input from stakeholders compiled during a transparent process before reaching a final determination, which will be based on facts and the statutory requirements.
